The Minnesota Career Development Association met on 3/20 for the March 2026 Case Consultation. Attendees discussed various topics related to resumes, and self-marketing after career delay.
Attendees discussed updating resumes with numerous roles and strategies for targeting resumes. Attendees discussed priority sections to include – Summary, Skills, Education, and Relevant Work Experience. The importance of tailoring your resume towards the job description and using artificial intelligence tools to assist were also discussed. Lastly, attendees reviewed the importance of transferable skills being highlighted when you pivot into a new career field.
General Best Practices recommended:
- Quality over quantity re: bullet statements
- Ensure the resume will get past applicant tracking systems with simplified formatting and focus on replicating keywords from job description
- Pare down resume so it is easier for recruiters to review; they give it 10-15 seconds (or less).
- Use the STAR (situation/task/action/results) format for your bullets
- Ensure that quantifiable results of your work are represented in bullets
The last conversation dealt with coaching a client that obtained their degree several years ago, never has been employed in the field and wants to enter it now. Attendees discussed strategies for supporting clients in similar situations:
- Wholistically support your client to help address feelings regarding professional transition.
- Discuss the competencies possessed that will promote qualifications for the field.
- Confirm career field is a current best match by administering an assessment leading to a RIASEC code.
- To make the case to employers, lean on supplemental experience like volunteering, related college extracurriculars, and relevant certifications/training.
- Create an employer introduction statement that includes reasons why the delay, reference to commitment to the field, and descriptions of any relevant experiences and trainings.
